RetroGaming on the Cheap - Capcom Arcade Cabinet
This week on RetroGaming on the cheap - Another game from Capcom, and the series isn't going to stop anytime soon with them as they're one of the rare publishers to actually re-edit their older title for the returning gamer or the youngsters discovering the past.
The minuses of this version is that you would need to have either an Xbox One as the title is compatible with this machine or a Playstation 3. Wonder why Sony is sleeping behind the wheel.
For the above average sum of $ 29.99 at the time of review, you're getting 15 of their famous arcade titles which includes last but not least Ghouls N' Ghosts - I know it's quite a hefty price to pay for old games but discovering these games in the format they were intended to be played has something satisfying to it.
It's of course emulation, so there's quite a significant change, however with the output image settings embedded we're able to make quite a few changes to play on the original aspect ratio.
Much like - Megaman Legacy Collection, you get enhanced versions with the ability to customize the output with scanlines, monitor - borders and so forth. The only thing that I regret is that you don't have the smell of cold tobacco, coffee and soda around you. Although with enough creativity you can get to that medium.
Achievements are still here but managing to beat Ghouls'N'Ghosts is already a feat in itself. Lest mention beating it twice - and I thought I was a donkey. (read ass)
$ 29.99 is the pricing for the full experience, as the game is segmented in 3 packs which are composing the entire game.
Black Tiger, 1943: The Battle of Midway, and Avengers. The second pack included Ghosts 'n Goblins, Gun.Smoke, and Section Z. The third pack included Side Arms, The Speed Rumbler, and Exed Exes. The fourth pack included Commando, Legendary Wings, and Trojan. The final pack included 1942, SonSon, Pirate Ship Higemaru. The bonus games were 1943 Kai and Vulgus, available only if the fifteen main ones were purchased.
Much like what Capcom has been doing in the past these are Disc Locked Content. A feature already present on the game install but not unlock til the price is paid, which is a practice that tends to disappear these days after a lot of backlash from the community.
However, and despite the general approach of Capcom towards the DLC done wrong - the experience and satisfaction coming from playing these arcade classics is there and must not be left aside. A good purchase, probably but better when on sales.
